A Hidden Gem in Berrima: Taylor’s Crown Inn – Where History Meets Hospitality Ever been on a road trip, winding through the countryside, when you suddenly stumble upon a place so rich in history and charm that you feel like you've stepped into a different era? That’s exactly the magic we found in Berrima, a quaint village tucked away in the heart of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. But this wasn’t just another pretty stop—this was Taylor’s Crown Inn, one of the oldest pubs in Australia, and let me tell you, the stories its walls could tell would make your head spin! A Pub Built by Convicts – Yes, You Read That Right! Picture this: a pub hand-built by convicts. That’s Taylor’s Crown Inn for you! It mirrors the iconic Harper’s Mansion, a National Trust treasure perched atop Berrima village. But here’s where things get even juicier—this wasn’t just a lively watering hole. Oh no, this historic site doubled as a boarding house upstairs and concealed three eerie jail cells beneath its floors. Back in the 1800s, convicts passing through on the Old Hume Highway would sometimes find themselves spending the night behind bars—literally. If they arrived too late to be hauled off to Berrima Gaol, they were “checked in” downstairs whether they liked it or not. Can you imagine sipping on a glass of red where prisoners once awaited their fate? Now that’s a pub with a past! A Place That Whispers History This iconic establishment was one of thirteen original inns in Berrima, dating all the way back to 1844. Fast forward nearly two centuries, and its spirit has been beautifully resurrected as Citizen Kanebridge Lodge, keeping its legacy alive with Taylor’s Inn Wine Bar, tucked just beyond an enchanting rose garden. It’s the ultimate blend of old-world charm and modern hospitality—where the past lingers in the air, yet comfort and warmth welcome you in. Crackling Fires, Fine Drinks & A Tunnel of Secrets… But wait, there’s more! This place has seen it all—soldiers and prison guards once gathered here after long shifts, indulging in beer, wine, and hearty meals before dozing off in front of what is now one of the largest fireplaces in the Southern Highlands. That fireplace? It sits inside a blacksmith’s building attached to the inn, radiating warmth and history in equal measure. And here’s where things take a thrilling turn. Rumour has it, a hidden tunnel once linked the Berrima Vault House to the gaol, a secret passage for smuggling contraband… and perhaps the odd clandestine visitor under the cover of darkness. A little scandal, a little mystery—just the kind of history we love unearthing! Why You Need to Visit If you’re a sucker for historic villages, hidden tales, and charming places to wine, dine, and soak in the past, Taylor’s Crown Inn is calling your name. Whether you’re on a weekend escape or just passing through, this place will transport you to another time—all while serving up a cozy, unforgettable experience. The incredible staff? They’ll even take you on a tour, giving you the full lowdown on the inn’s incredible past, all while making sure your cravings are satisfied.

We recently had the privilege of celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary at Citizen Kanebridge. We couldn’t have picked a more suitable venue for an intimate dinner with family. The atmosphere the team create is truely unique. The selection of Tapas was delicious, executed beautifully and affordable. Jaime, Oscar and Spencer are friendly yet professional. What a gem to have you on our doorstep… we are already finding an excuse to make another reservation. Thank you so much for hosting a wonderful evening for our celebration.

We had a lovely Father’s Day breakfast. The food was great and we received it promptly which was super helpful as we had a 2 year old who doesn’t like to be contained. She had some toys from the kids area to help and she ate all of her food. Staff as always were friendly and attentive. The menu is a mix of traditional and not. There were zucchini fritters and mushrooms on sourdough. Prices are very competitive

If you ever find yourself wandering through Berrima in need of sustenance, warmth, or a scone that could probably negotiate world peace, make your way to Citizen Kanebridge Café. We stopped in for scones, tea, and juices, and left feeling refreshed. The proprietor—known to mere mortals as Mouse—runs the place with the kind of friendliness and flexibility normally reserved for golden retrievers and Olympic gymnasts. He’ll chat with you, charm you, and probably convince you that yes, you do deserve that extra dollop of cream. Mouse also casually mentioned he’s in an ongoing (and clearly hilarious) rivalry with his sister up the road at Bendooley Estate. It’s like a friendly village feud, but instead of pitchforks they battle with baked goods. The scones? Fluffy. The tea? Restorative. The juices? Bright enough to revive the dead. The overall vibe? Like being adopted by the nicest café family in the Southern Highlands. Five stars. Would return. Will be bragging that I met a man named Mouse for years

The delightful restaurants and cafes dotted around Berrima are just a stone throw from each other-- and here you've got plenty of options. This historic town seems to be the gastronomic capital of Southern Highlands, so it's no surprise that my lunch experience @ the Vault House was amazing. Ordered their linguine pesto with prawns, and it was both charming and generous. Thank you for a wonderful lunch!
